C.O.C.A Style Interview:Brooklyn Circus

Brand:Brooklyn Circus
Designer/Owner: Quincy "Ouigi" Theodore
Style: C.O.C.A

Why the name Brooklyn Circus?

The more we traveled the world the more we realized that Brooklyn operated like a circus. With so much talent from around the world settling in Brooklyn and creating their own show under Brooklyn as a tent, we felt it was only right to bring the world our story through The Brooklyn Circus. Of course in return bring the world to Brooklyn, which has to continue to keep the cycle going. It's a culture exchange, which is why BKc + Solemates Chicago, The Brooklyn Circus SF and our global ties are important. It's an equal exchange of Style and character.

Tell us the inside story to spearheading the brand and your store?

Clothing is our means of communication but is simply the wardrobe to our lives and our quest to live 100+ years. The story is set out to unfold through a 100 years, no rush to being all over in a short time. We won't be around to physically see it, but that's the beauty in creating what we are creating. Our series of books, magazine and journals entitled "Changing of The Guards" will give you a better view of what the story is. It's our blog (www.thebkcircus.com/blog) edited and in print.

Why Fashion Design? Fashion is uniform, uniform is discipline, discipline for us is identity. We are always looking to indentify ourselves, who we are and what we stand for.

What set BKC apart from other brands? The DNA of our brand.
Who inspires The Brooklyn Circus? Everyday people, risk takers who are not afraid of laughing at themselves. Being who you are at any cost and knowing that you may die for it.

Define trendsetter. Does your line adhere to your definition, why?
People that set out to set trends and get credit for temporary swings. We are not trendsetters, trends come and go. Our interest is to build individual style, respect the shoulders we stand on and build permanent character.

The state of fashion today is ____________? Why?
Fashion has always been a balance of Art and commerce. Today, there is allot more commerce than art, it's how fast and how much, Why? because factories have to produce more volume to stay in business. The internet and technology has made things faster, faster is the new F word. Selling gold was pretty good in the days, now it's how fast you can go platinum. How fast you sold out your collection or shipment of next hot thing. Tailors are being replaced by foreign factories and people don't dress up for events anymore. Please quote this: FASTER is the new F word. F@$Ter!

How would you define your personal sense of style? All over the place to get to one place. Our style is our journal it tells the story, our mood, our influences and some of our inner most thoughts.

Favorite Chicago clothing line or independent label?
For now my two favorite people in Chicago are Autumn and Brian. They are the most beautiful people The Brooklyn Circus has met in the past few years. We are very interested in spending more time with them in Chicago to bridge the gap between what we are doing in NYc, SF and Chicago.

How do you feel about the state of fashion in Chicago?
I plan to spend more time in Chicago this year to answer that fairly. Yet I sincerely feel that Chicago needs more outside influence, more foreigners, more culture exploring.
